I love my blog!

I love my blog because I can do what I want with it. And if I want to show off a great photo of my kiddo’s I can – and if I want to show the beauty of this time of year I can.

Take a look at this:

The tree in my background as it looks right at this very moment!
Simply breathtaking!

And then there are these guys:

My son, Ryan.
I look at this and see a little boy, not a twelve year old!

My daughter, Brielle. She’s so full of life. I love the winter chill on her face and those rosy lips!

Mike’s daughter, Melissa. What a cutie and she looks amazing with that winter chill too!

Mike’s youngest daughter, Jessica! Cute, funny and almost too much energy to stop and let me take a photo!

These are the kiddo’s that are actually playing outside together!

Thinking About Better Writing

I was sitting today, just thinking about some of the ways I go about trying to be a better writer. I think the most important way that I accomplish this, is by reading. And reading, I do a lot of. I am the girl in which when you pull up my library card information, have twenty three books checked out, seven sitting on the shelf at the library waiting for me to come get them, three in transit, and four waiting to be filled. I read EVERYTHING. Even magazines.

However, my obsession for reading has expanded beyond the walls of the library or our local bookstore. In fact, it has gone beyond magazine subscriptions and junk mail. It has now landed on the Internet. In the form of blogs. I have become a hopeless addict and born stalker to several blogs currently active. I even get upset when I go to read one, and there has been no update for awhile. Not upset, mad. Just upset, “I wish there was something new to hear about”.

I’ve also discovered that by reading others blogs, I develop new styles of writing, new vocabulary, and often new statements or cliche’s that I utter from time to time. Interesting really.

I was thinking about all this today, because I have been talking to my daughter, who wants to be an author when she grows up, about ways to improve your writing and learn more about what your style is. I told her everything I just shared with you.

She was curious about the blogs I read, and thankfully I am proud to say, with the exception of small handful, I can share most of them with her. They are clean. So she has been browsing blogs since yesterday afternoon, learning about everything from scrapbooking, ADHD and parenting. It’s been rather enlightening, but mostly she just giggles when she reads it.

If you are looking for a way to improve your writing, and find a “voice” that might be slightly hidden within you, just start reading other people’s blogs, and then sit down and write your own blog entry. You might be surprised what pops out.

Must Have Scrapbooking Supplies

What are my MUST have’s for scrapbooking. I am asked this all the time. So here is my must have list! Complete with many PERSONAL favorites!

  • Cardstock - this is the base of all pages! You must have cardstock. My favorite is Bazzil Basics! Great texture and fun to use!

  • Patterned paper is an absolute no-brainer. However I am choosy. I don’t buy anything that is busy, or “gender” specific unless I have something in mind already. I also try to buy paper “packs” so I get the most for my $$ – an important key if you are a frugal scrapbooker! (love those Michael’s Slabs!)
  • Scissors – I use the Fiskars Softouch® Micro-Tip® Scissors and I have THREE pairs! LOL That’s how much I love them!

  • Paper trimmer – I use the Falcon Cutter – the reason I love this cutter is that A) It cuts 12 x 12 pieces of paper without any bunching at all. B) It uses REGULAR razor blades that my frugal self can purcase and wal-mart and occasionally see at the $ store! C) It was the first cutter I was introduced to, and I’ve tried all the rest and have been very disappointed. D) The handle lifts up so you can put your paper down and then line it up before ever closing the handle.

  • I love my Hole Punches. The 1/16th is smaller than the standard hole punch you’d get at an office supply store. I use brads a lot to decorate my pages, and it’s much easier to insert a brad when you’ve punched a little hole first. And the other uses for the different sizes are limitless. (I’ll provide examples at a later time!)

  • A Pen Set – for journaling – another probable “no brainer”. If you use your computer, fine, but I do suggest using your handwriting at some point. You have no idea what emotions the sight of someone specials handwriting can evoke!

    • A black or brown permanent ink pad/or walnet ink. You don’t have to be a rubber stamper to get a lot of use from an inkpad. I use it to edge my matted photos and journaling piece before placing them onto my patterned background paper, or I’ll tear a piece of paper and ink the edge, then place it down as a border. It gives me a nice, finished look and gives the effect of having matted the piece on black paper—without actually using black paper! To ink the edge, I simply hold my paper in one hand, my inkpad in the other and run the inkpad along the edge of the paper. Start with a light touch because you can always add more.

St. Louis is expecting a big snow storm again!

Well, it’s all over the news and everyone is aware, and it’s obvious by the salt trucks and the workers out on the roads, frantically dropping salt and other materials to make the snow less hazardous for all of us.

Once again, St. Louis and St. Charles, Missouri are going to get hit hard again with snow and ice. As of this writing, we are expecting four to six inches between midnight tonight (Saturday), and noon tomorrow morning (Sunday). They are saying that the heavy snow will start after midnight and will be thick and heavy at times. I am not sure what to think of any of that, except I love snow. I don’t like the ice that often accompanies it here in St. Louis. But I definitely love snow.

The kids are looking forward to a fun day of playing in the snow, and making snow angels and sledding. Sometimes they try to build snowmen, while the grown-ups are all out busy shoveling and de-icing everything.

I am looking forward to a little white powdery stuff, without all the yucky ice and sleet that come with it.

So, happy winter to all, and if you are here locally or around the surrounding area’s getting hit, stay safe, and warm. And run to the store if you think about it.

Laptops Make Writing Easier

writing with a laptop
Isn’t it pretty? Mine looks JUST like it!

I cannot believe I forgot to post an update on the laptop. It actually arrived the day after I commented that it had shipped. And I’ve been in heaven ever since. In fact, I got everything transferred from our desktop computer to the laptop computer that day, and beyond that have been a writing and researching fool ever since.

I’ve discovered that there are unsecured linksys networks everywhere! We took the laptop in the car last night, so we could watch an episode of Ghost Hunters, (one of my favorite TV shows), while we waited for our two oldest, to get done with a youth group movie night.

While we were waiting outside our church office, I was displayed a huge list of networks to choose from. It cracked me up when our youth leader’s personal network was listed. Too funny. But alas I digress, seriously if you do travel with a laptop and you connect with a wireless connection, be VERY careful what you are jumping on and connecting to. Unsecured networks are very unsafe way to view the Internet. So if you plan to provide any personal information, save it for when you are home with your own secure network.

I knew I was smart, but I didn’t realize that I had the talents I have at times. I was able to set up the entire Wireless Broadband Connection to the main desktop, my laptop, and two of the computers we have for the kiddo’s. In addition, that only took about 15 minutes, and was mainly waiting for software installation on the computers. After that, in only a matter of minutes, I had all four computer’s connected via the wireless network. I have never set one up on my own before, so I had no idea I could do it!

Too funny really!

I am so excited about my laptop. I have been writing and researching things far more than ever before because I have the ease of taking it with me when I go. Took the kids to the library two nights in a row and brought the laptop with me so I’d have something to do while I waited. So convenient.

Well, off to get some work done!

Love to all my writer friends!

It Shipped! From CHINA!!

Ugh!

Well, the laptop shipped, which is so incredibly exciting. I cannot wait to get my hands on that little machine. I don’t think I have ever had an item so highly anticipated before. But then, when I would have gotten a laptop before, I was not writing professionally, churning out articles daily, writing new pages to my novel and editing three children’s books!

Now that I do this for a living, I am overly anxious to get my hands on ANY item that will make my writing easier. I remember getting excited when I discovered that my voice activated portable tape player was the most useful item. Boy, hasn’t that gone to the wayside!

So, according to the shipping information, it left China. We were not aware it was being shipped from China but we cannot think of where else CN would be since Connectictut is CT and California CA. Am I forgetting somewhere? Besides, where DOES HP ship from? LOL It makes sense I guess. It just means a darn long wait!

Well it left yesterday, and there was no update today before Mike went to work. I will either check later tonight or in the morning. I am so darn excited I’d check every 5 minutes if I could!

I am just hoping it is here by this weekend, and I would prefer by tomorrow or Thursday. But with no updates as of this afternoon since it left, I am not expecting much.

Yay! Cross your fingers that it gets here soon!!

Mocha Update

I had every intention of updating everyone along the way, about Mocha, our rescued kitty.

After we had her for a few days, we realized that she had very obviously been out in the snow and ice storm we had earlier in the month. No telling where she took shelter, but it couldn’t have been with anyone who cared about her. She weighed only 3lbs when we found her. THREE POUNDS! That is not normal!

So we have been feeding her well, and she is quite happy. She was on a high fat diet for a few weeks until she was better. But here she is. I have no idea how well you will be able to tell in the picture, how much weight she has gained, but I think her wider sides show a lot (opposed to the original photo I showed you.)  I promise to do a little better with updates until she is totally healthy. She weighs somewhere around six pounds now.
